Frequently Asked Questions

How does Burner Work?

Burner is a complete Liquid Staked ETH hardware wallet that works with your smartphone's NFC connection and web browser through the BurnerOS web app—no installation required. BurnerOS allows you to generate private keys, sign transactions, and check your LSETH balances. To send LSETH, just use BurnerOS to prepare the transaction and tap your Burner when prompted.

How secure is Burner?

Burner uses the same secure element chip technology found in more expensive hardware wallets. It generates keys from hardware-based randomness and extra entropy that you provide. Requests to sign transactions are PIN-code protected, and Burner will permanently lock after 20 failed attempts. If you receive a Burner as a gift, you can verify whether or not its key has ever been used to sign a message.

Can I use Burner offline?

Yes, we offer open source libraries to interact with Burner at a low level. These libraries can be used with smartphone web apps, dedicated apps and command line interfaces. They also work with desktop PCs and hardwired NFC readers meaning you can use a fully offline desktop computer to interface with Burner for the highest security.

Who built Burner?

Burner was created by the team behind Offline Cash, a physical Bitcoin banknote that used secure NFC chips linked to physical paper notes for storing and gifting crypto. Unlike Offline Cash, Burner is more resilient and capable, allowing the gifter to send any amount of LSETH without the need for a dedicated app or backend services.

If there is no seed phrase how can I back up Burner?

BurnerOS includes a Card Duplicator tool that can be used to backup one Burner to another. You can also verify whether a gifted Burner has been duplicated or is itself a duplicate.

How is Burner different from other wallets?

Burner is designed to make gifting LSETH easy without sacrificing simplicity or security. Unlike QR codes or seed phrases that require technical knowledge and external apps, Burner is immediately usable by the recipient through our simple BurnerOS web app. Compared to traditional hardware wallets, Burner has no steep learning curve; simply tap it to your phone and you're ready to go.

Does Burner support Liquid Staked ETH?

Yes, Burner supports Liquid Staked ETH (LSETH) on the base network. You can store, send, and gift LSETH securely using Burner's NFC hardware wallet.

What happens if Burner is no longer supported?

If for any reason BurnerOS stops working or is blocked in certain jurisdictions you can always interface with Burner through our open source libraries.
